Syllabus Description:

Second-Year Estonian, Fall 2019

Class meets M-F 11:30-12:20, Savery 169.

(class meeting time will change, as arranged with instructor)

Foreign Language Learning takes time, patience and persistence, and lots of courage.

This class will focus on a classic work of Estonian Literature, the first book in the 5-book series Tõde ja Õigus (Truth and Justice) by Anton Hansen Tammsaare.

  • Our objective is to engage as much Estonian text as possible, using any means possible to understand that text.
  • Reading will be in Estonian;
  • Discussions will usually be in English, with reference to the Estonian-language text.

Grades

  • (50%) Daily presentations - oral responses to assigned readings.
  • (40%) Weekly essays (1-2 pages) analyzing or responding to a passage you translate into English
  • (10%) Final essay- combine and revise weekly essays, or write an entirely new essay!
  • (10%) peer reviews of classmates’ writing assignments
