Kurso turinys ir tikslai/ Class content and goals


This course is designed for learners who have preliminary knowledge of Lithuanian. It focuses on all four skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening.  The goal of the course is to consolidate previous skills of Lithuanian and to build on them further. On completion of the course students should be able to communicate in, and understand, Lithuanian in a variety of practical everyday situations.

To reach that goal only authentic material will be used: Lithuanian books, excerpt of movies, songs etc.


Through the communicative approach I hope to achieve a high degree of interaction in the classroom and make your learning of Lithuanian language and culture enjoyable. We strive for a learning atmosphere that challenges your skills in a supportive way. There are no wrong answers, only good attempts. Emphasis will be given to all language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Also, all four language skills will be emphasized: speaking, listening, reading and writing. Speaking skills: basic communicative patterns: greetings, introductions, conversations, searching and giving information. Dialogue in formal and informal situations. Basic features of ethnic culture. Listening skills: comprehension of texts; recognition of word – groups. Reading skills: comprehension of texts; scanning gist reading. Writing skills: sound-symbol relationship; principles of spelling system; writing short formal and informal texts. Lithuanian grammar: system of declension and the main meaning of declension cases, conjugation of verbs; tenses; moods; vocabulary items and word-groups.


Topics: holidays and traditions, family now and earlier; houses, flats and furniture; professions and jobs; travelling; leisure and daily routine. Cultural references: national and religious celebrations, newspaper articles.

Communicational skills: congratulating people, talking about family; saying dates, renting and buying a house; talking about job and job interview; planning trips; understanding and giving directions; making appointments, offering to spend time together, writing CV and advertisements, describing places, writing postcard, giving suggestions, talking about daily routine. 

Grammar: different kind of questions, verb tenses, the frequentative past tense, cases of nouns and adjectives, possession, sentence conjunctions, degrees of comparison, subjunctive mood, prepositions.


Daily attendance is essential. If you need to miss (part of) a class due to an emergency, contact the instructor beforehand or as soon as possible.


20% Darbas auditorijoje/ Class participation: based on active participation in class activities, effort to use Lithuanian and completion of assigned work.


20% Namų darbai/ Homework: Homework will be assigned.


40% Testai ir kontroliniai darbai / Tests and Quizzes: There will be 7 small quizzes, after each learned lesson. These exams will consist of a written test written in class and the dates will be arranged in advance.


10% Egzaminas žodžiu/ Oral exam: Oral exam will be arranged during the last week of instructions. The exam will consist of a short interview/conversation in Lithuanian between one student and the Lithuanian instructor based on learning material.


10% Egzaminas raštu/ Written exam: The written exam will be given on the last class meeting. The date of the exam will be arranged in advance



Catalog Description: 
Intensive practice in speaking, reading, and writing. Functional review of grammar. First in a sequence of three. Prerequisite: either LITH 103 or LITH 150.
