Congratulations to Maxine Savage for being awarded the Arlene Hunter Scholarship for 2022-2023! The Arlene Hunter Scholarship is awarded annually to a graduate student in the humanities. This scholarship will support Maxine as they continue working on their dissertation, “Borealism Backwards: West Nordic Exoticization and its Others.” Their project addresses borealism—the exoticization of the North à la Edward Said’s Orientalism—as an ongoing phenomenon shaping discourses of sexuality and race in the Nordic region. Maxine’s work will add to the small but growing body of work on queer and racialized subjects in the Nordics.
