We are thrilled to announce that Karin Filipsson has been awarded the PhD degree in Scandinavian Languages and Literature in Autumn quarter 2025. Her PhD dissertation, Jonas Hassen Khemiri and the Swedish Novel: Autofiction, Intertextuality and Postmigrant Melancholy, investigates the novels of the contemporary Swedish writer, whose works have been translated into 35 languages. Simultaneous with the dissertation defense at UW in early December, The Sisters (the first novel by Khemiri to be written in English) was ranked by The New Yorker as one of the 10 Best Books of fiction of 2025. Dr. Filipsson’s research on Khemiri’s novels in relation to autofiction is soon forthcoming in Scandinavian Studies (nr. 98.2). Filipsson entered UW’s PhD program in Scandinavian Studies in Autumn 2020 and now holds the position of Lecturer of Nordic Studies and Swedish at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Congratulations, Karin!
