This endowment honors the memory of Ann-Marie Lindqvist Gavel (1908-1996) and Gunnar Gavel (1908-1993) of Linköping, Sweden, whose strong interest in scholarship, higher education, and support for Swedish studies abroad will always be fondly remembered.

The purpose of this endowment is to provide support for undergraduate and graduate students in the Swedish program by such means as scholarships, travel stipends, research awards, and activities related to Swedish studies.

This $2,000 stipend is awarded on the basis of academic achievement and educational objectives in the area of Swedish language and literature or area studies with a Swedish emphasis.

Interested students should submit a letter of application, stating their educational objectives as they relate to the purposes of the Gavel Endowment, along with a current transcript, and two letters of recommendation (one from outside the Department of Scandinavian Studies).
