Spring Quarter 2014
The Department of Scandinavian Studies at the University of Washington is pleased to announce an opportunity for teachers and scholars of Norwegian studies in the humanities and social sciences to teach quarter-long (10-week) courses on Norway, its life and culture at the University of Washington, Seattle, March 16-June 15, 2014.
Interested applicants possessing native or near-native Norwegian language proficiency who have earned a Ph.D. or MA degree (or equivalent), including advanced graduate students in any field within the humanities or social sciences, as well as established scholars who wish to combine the appointment with a sabbatical leave, are eligible to apply. Proposals from applicants in the Nordic countries and North America are welcome. The proposed course, or courses, should be on the undergraduate level (lower or upper division) and should appeal broadly while focusing on some aspect of Norway and Norwegian life and society. Courses proposed should have 40-50 student contact hours over a period of 10 weeks. The UW academic year consists of three 10-week quarters (Autumn, Winter, Spring) and a Summer Quarter.
Salary and benefits are competitive. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. Travel to/from Seattle is included along with an additional supplement to help pay for housing.
The University of Washington Department of Scandinavian Studies currently offers undergraduate and graduate studies in Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, Old Icelandic, Latvian, Lithuanian, Estonian, Scandinavian Area Studies and Baltic studies. Courses include topics in languages, literature, history, politics, folklore, cinema and society.
