Ian Gwin has been awarded the Aurora Borealis Award for Best Language and Literature Paper presented at the 2021 Society of Scandinavian Studies Conference. His paper, "Jaan Oks: the Decadent Savage", relates postcolonial theory to the short-lived Estonian writer, and argues for the writer's polemical use of early modernist literary techniques.
The paper began as a seminar paper for the Scand 513 methods seminar taught by Marianne Stecher-Hansen, and drew from his ongoing translations of Oks and other Estonian modernists. Ian will be recognized (virtually) at the upcoming SASS 2022 conference.
