On May 26-29, 2022, the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies (AABS) will hold its 28th biennial Conference on Baltic Studies on the UW campus. The AABS is the world’s premier scholarly society for research on Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Its global membership includes scholars and supporters from North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Through panels, roundtable discussions, and workshops, the conference will foster global collaboration between researchers.
The conference, titled “Baltic Studies at a Crossroads” will include evening events open to the public: The first plenary session on Thursday, May 26 (6:00 pm, wǝɫǝbʔaltxʷ – Intellectual House), will examine convergences between Baltic studies and Indigenous studies. Friday, May 27 (6:00 pm, Kane Hall 130), will feature readings of Baltic literature, including works by Matilda Olkinaitė, Inara Verzemnieks, and Ivar Ivask. (Some Seattleites may remember the “Baltic Elegies”, a series of poems that Ivask first performed on the UW campus in 1990, at the 12th Conference on Baltic Studies). And on Saturday, May 28 (6:00 pm, Kane Hall 130), leading scholars will analyze relations between the Baltic countries and Taiwan. Daytime events include a plenary session about the war in Ukraine, and an event featuring diplomatic voices from the Baltic states. These events will also be recorded for later viewing online. Beginning earlier in May, two exhibits will open in the Lobby of Allen Library: "Arvo Pärt - Renowned and Unknown" and “The Hong Kong Baltic Way.”
