Congratulations to Maxine Savage for being awarded the Chester Fritz International Research Fellowship for 2022-2023! The Fellowship provides support to UW graduate students doing research that takes place outside of the United States. Maxine will spend a quarter of the 2022-2023 academic year conducting research in the Nordic countries, as they continue working on their dissertation, “North Adjacent: Race, Sex, and the Spatiotemporality of Borealism.” Their project addresses borealism—the exoticization of the North à la Edward Said’s Orientalism—as an ongoing phenomenon shaping discourses of sexuality and race in the Nordic region. Maxine’s work will add to the small but growing body of work on queer and racialized subjects in the Nordics.
