Swedish Program Holiday Letter

Submitted by Stacey Breitberg on

God jul allihopa! Wishing you warm holiday greetings from the UW Swedish Studies program!

This year, Associate Teaching Professor Lauren Poyer and Kim Kraft organized another wildly successful summer study abroad program in Stockholm and Helsinki titled, "Art and Activism in the Nordic Region".  Over the course of a month, a group of twenty-one students pursuing a variety of majors embraced experiential learning with a focus on activism and creative expression. This included visits to museums, historic sites, interactive workshops, guest lectures, and of course an introduction to Nordic languages. Neuroscience major Jillian Holbrook's sums up the transformative power of study abroad when she writes: "From traversing the galleries of the National Museum to questioning Sweden's politics and approach to criminal justice to singing in the ABBA Museum to engaging with Nordic linguistic landscapes to enjoying Swedish candy, my first experience traveling internationally markedly considered art, activism, history, social justice, politics, language, and culture." Poyer and Kraft are excited to offer this program again for Summer 2025 in partnership with the UW Honors Program.

Thank you for your continued financial support that will ensure that our students have a strong program full of opportunities to explore Swedish language and culture. Stort tack!

May your holidays and new year be peaceful.

Med vänliga vinterhälsningar,

Amanda Doxtater
